Shawn Smith is a Percussionist, Composer, and Educator that has an in depth knowledge and experience in both Orchestral Percussion and Drum-Set. He is currently finishing his Bachelor´s degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Idaho, studying under Daniel Bukvich.
At the University of Idaho, he was Drum Captain (Center Snare) of the Vandal Marching Band in 2008, which included their halftime performance at the Seattle Seahawks game. He has performed with all Jazz Bands and Choirs at the U of I, and was section leader in all three major instrumental ensembles. Shawn has also performed with the U of I´s many theatrical productions over the past five years as well as the premiere Dancers, Drummers, Dreamers troupe, which has been the featured entertainment at many prestigious functions, such as former Senator Jim McClure´s 2009 Legacy of Leading award ceremony, and the 2009 All-State MMEA convention in Missoula, Montana.
Outside of school, Shawn enjoys playing with both orchestral and more traditional groups including the LCSC Big Band, the Snake River Six, the Idaho Composers Orchestra, the Utah Symphony, the Idaho-Washington Symphony, and the Idaho Repertoire Theatre, with their performances of "Forever Plaid" (2008) and "Chaps!" (2009). He is currently the drummer for Interstate Groove, which has toured the Pacific Northwest and was featured in the October 2008 issue of Blot magazine.
Shawn is also the drummer of various jazz and funk combos. His combo's have won first place in 2007, 2009, and 2010 in the college combo competition at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival, the largest educational jazz festival in the world. He has performed numerous times on the main stage at the same festival and was asked to be the house drummer for Hamp´s Club in 2009. Over the years, Shawn has had the pleasure to play with and get to know many great musicians such as, Jeff Hamilton, Tamir Hendelman, Claudio Roditi, Christoph Luty, John Clayton, Wally "Gator" Watson, Christian Fabian, Kuni Mikami, Dick Oats, and many more.
Recently, Shawn taught and composed percussion parts for Clarkston High School´s Drumline, and their 2009 marching band season.
